Sjoerd Koster is a BVI-resident independent director and co-founder of Mount Sage Advisors, with more than 25 years in banking, fiduciary services, regulatory governance and digital assets. He spent thirteen years as General Manager of a SIX-listed, BVI FSC-regulated bank, is a former President of the BVI Bank Association, and serves on the BVI Financial Services Complaints Tribunal.
Areas of Board Experience
Sjoerd accepts appointments where the board has a genuine role to play and full access to the information needed to play it. His appointments have included regulated bank entities, investment managers and funds, financing and holding structures, and digital asset businesses. He does not act as a nominee.
What he brings to a board is the habit of a bank general manager: reading the credit file, questioning the counterparty, understanding where liquidity actually sits, and expecting management to answer in specifics.
Banking & Financial Services
Thirteen years as General Manager of a SIX-listed, BVI FSC-regulated bank gave Sjoerd direct responsibility for credit, treasury, operations, AML/CFT and regulatory relationships in the BVI. As President of the BVI Bank Association he represented the sector to government and the Commission. That vantage point — inside a regulated institution and across the industry — informs how he approaches regulatory expectations on every board he sits on.
Finance & Lending
Credit is where his experience runs deepest. Sjoerd has agreed facility terms, monitored covenant compliance, managed defaults and workouts, and sat on credit committees. For BVI entities carrying on finance and leasing business, that means a director who can engage with funding terms, exposures and borrower performance rather than relying on advisers to explain the transaction.
Economic Substance
Sjoerd leads Mount Sage’s economic substance implementation work: resident directorship, board meetings held in Road Town, premises and records infrastructure. He works alongside the client’s legal and tax advisers, who determine classification; his role is the practical arrangement once requirements are established.
Digital Assets
He has held board appointments at regulated digital asset execution platforms, and approaches Web3 businesses through the lens of custody, private-key controls, counterparty exposure, liquidity and sanctions and AML — the same questions a bank would ask, applied to a different balance sheet. See Digital Asset & Web3 Governance.
